Semiconductor PI Tubing: Thin-Wall Insulation and Equipment Selection

PI tubing is precision tubing made from polyimide. It combines a thin-wall structure, electrical insulation and thermal stability in limited space. For semiconductor equipment, the material name is only a starting point: dimensions, installation, operating environment and acceptance criteria must also be confirmed.

Yan Fun assists with PI tubing selection and supply enquiries. This guide covers general material properties and engineering evaluation. Available dimensions, performance, processing and documents must be confirmed for the specified part number.

Three Important Properties of PI Tubing

1. Thin walls: preserve space for internal components

Specialist PI tubing processes can produce small inner diameters, thin walls and precise tolerances. When the outside diameter is constrained, thinner walls leave more room for internal wires or components. This supports miniaturisation, but cut quality, insertion and local loads become more important.

When fitting tubing over a metal component, check the maximum component OD, minimum tubing ID, end chamfers and assembly clearance together. Matching nominal dimensions alone does not ensure reliable production assembly.

2. Electrical insulation: separate adjacent conductive parts

The dielectric properties of PI are a key reason for its use in precision industrial applications. Tubing can separate wires from surrounding components, but material dielectric data is not equivalent to the safe working voltage of the finished tube.

Wall thickness, temperature, humidity, surface contamination, cuts and assembly damage can affect performance. Specify continuous working voltage, short-duration withstand testing, test duration and leakage-current requirements separately so supply specifications match acceptance methods.

3. Thermal stability and mechanical strength

Manufacturer literature identifies thermal stability, chemical resistance and tensile strength as PI properties. Evaluate continuous temperature, short-term peaks, exposure duration and cycle count separately. A peak lasting seconds differs from long-term service at the same temperature.

Chemical resistance must be evaluated against the actual chemical, concentration, exposure time and temperature. The labels “heat resistant” and “chemical resistant” do not establish suitability for every equipment process.

ID, OD and Wall Thickness: Reading the Specification

The inner diameter (ID) determines what fits inside; the outer diameter (OD) determines fit within the assembly; wall thickness (WT) affects available space and tube structure. These dimensions are interdependent and must be specified consistently.

Geometric example, not a Yan Fun supply specification:For an ID of 1.00 mm and OD of 1.10 mm, nominal wall thickness is (1.10 − 1.00) ÷ 2 = 0.05 mm. This is a geometric relationship only; it does not establish measurement tolerances, eccentricity or available sizes.

Potential Applications in Semiconductor Equipment

The following are engineering evaluation directions based on material properties, not existing Yan Fun equipment installations. Adoption requires evaluation of the specified part number, equipment conditions and trial assembly results.

  • Wire insulation tubing:Separate wires from metal parts in confined space. Check insertion clearance, rubbing points, bending and fixation.
  • Sensor or measurement-component isolation:Evaluate tubular isolation around small components. Confirm temperature, electrical requirements and contact with adjacent materials.
  • Precision tubular parts:Consider PI where internal passage, OD and wall thickness are constrained. Confirm dimensional stability, cut quality and resistance to assembly loads.

Vacuum and Cleanliness Require Separate Confirmation

For vacuum, near-wafer or chemical-process locations, specify outgassing, particles, ionic contamination, surface residues and packaging requirements. General heat-resistance data cannot replace cleanliness or vacuum testing, and PI film data cannot be treated as tubing specifications.

First establish whether the tubing is in a peripheral equipment area or a process-sensitive zone, then determine necessary documents and tests. Validation scope can vary substantially with location.

From Selection to Samples: Four Steps

  1. Define the function:Identify whether electrical isolation, limited space, heat resistance or a precision passage is the main requirement, and list non-negotiable conditions.
  2. Record operating conditions:Record continuous and short-duration temperatures, voltage, chemicals, vacuum and cleanliness requirements, plus assembly loads and bending.
  3. Confirm by part number:Compare dimensions, tolerances, material data, cutting requirements and available documents, then confirm sample supply.
  4. Validate the application:Perform trial assembly, visual, electrical and environmental tests as required. Document passing criteria in purchasing and acceptance specifications.

Six Items to Prepare Before Enquiring

  • ID, OD, wall thickness, length and tolerances.
  • Installation location, mating parts, assembly and fixation.
  • Working voltage, withstand-test method and acceptance criteria.
  • Continuous and short-duration temperatures, exposure time and thermal cycling.
  • Chemicals, vacuum, cleanliness, packaging and document requirements.
  • Sample and production quantities, original part number, drawings and requested lead time.

Frequently asked questions

Can PI tubing directly replace PTFE tubing?

Matching ID and OD is insufficient. Compare friction, flexibility, temperature, electrical and chemical requirements. If assembly depends on sliding or bending, validate those conditions too. Replacement should be based on application test results.

Is PI tubing always heat shrink tubing?

No. Non-shrink precision tubing and tubing that shrinks when heated have different requirements. Specify whether shrinkage is needed, the final dimensions and the heating process.

Is “high-temperature PI tubing” enough for a quote?

Dimensions, tolerances, temperature and exposure duration, quantity and application are normally needed. If only a sample or original part number is available, send photos, dimensions and existing documents first so missing information can be identified.

This guide covers general material properties and engineering selection methods. Dimensional examples are not Yan Fun supply specifications. Actual dimensions, performance, processing and documents depend on the part number confirmed by Yan Fun and application validation results.

How to Enquire About Probe-Card Polyimide Insulation Tubing

Semiconductor PI tubing is also called polyimide tubing or thin-wall PI tubing. For probe-card tubing, review ID, OD, wall thickness, dimensional tolerances, cut length and assembly method together.

What information should you send to a Taiwan PI tubing supplier?

For a PI tubing supply enquiry or quote from Yan Fun, provide the application, ID, OD, wall thickness and tolerances, length per piece, sample requirements and estimated quantity. Available sizes, minimum order quantity, lead time and processing are confirmed against the specified requirements.

Which English product terms can you use in an enquiry?

Use “Polyimide Tubing”, “Thin-wall Polyimide Tubing” or “Polyimide Insulation Tubing”. For probe-card wiring, specify “Polyimide Tubing for Probe Cards” and include dimensions and operating conditions.
