Clear Mylar / PET Film: Properties, Insulation Uses and Selection

Clear Mylar / PET Film: Appearance and Insulation Selection

Clear Mylar commonly describes PET polyester film with a transparent appearance. PET stands for polyethylene terephthalate; Mylar is a brand name. Confirm brand, material grade, thickness and appearance together to avoid selecting by name alone.

Yan Fun assists with PET / Mylar film selection and supply enquiries. This guide covers general properties, potential uses and processing evaluation. Clear grades, dimensions, documents and processing capability are confirmed against the actual part number and requirements.

Material, Brand and Appearance Are Separate

NameMeaningWhat cannot be assumed
PETA polyester material typeBrand, transparency, flame-retardant and electrical grades
MylarA polyester film brand nameThat every grade is transparent or has identical performance
Transparent filmAppearance or light-transmission requirementsOptical grade, scratch resistance, anti-fingerprint or flame retardancy

If the drawing specifies a brand and part number, provide the complete specification. If considering clear PET, state the primary function—insulation, visibility, printing or mechanical separation—so selection matches the application.

Important Properties of Clear Mylar / PET

1. Transparency: evaluate actual visibility requirements

Transparent film permits viewing underlying markings or components, but visibility is not the same as clarity. Light transmission, haze, surface condition, thickness and assembly method can affect the result.

To read scales, text or components through film, place a sample of the specified thickness over the actual object. Request optical data, scratch resistance or coatings explicitly; transparent appearance does not establish these properties.

2. Thin-sheet form: separation in limited spaces

PET film can provide a separation or covering layer in narrow gaps. Check thickness and tolerances, flatness, fixation and fit with adjacent components.

Thinner is not necessarily better. Thickness affects handling, stiffness, assembly and electrical requirements. Establish the function before selecting candidate thicknesses.

3. Electrical, mechanical and thermal performance: confirm by grade

Manufacturer Mylar / Melinex literature covers electrical insulation and different industrial grades. Selection must match the specified part number and thickness; data for one product cannot be applied to all clear PET films.

Confirm continuous operating temperature, short-term heat exposure, working voltage, withstand testing and environmental conditions separately. For UL, flame-retardant or other document requirements, confirm covered part numbers, thicknesses and scope.

Potential Applications

The following selection directions are based on material form and manufacturer applications. They do not establish suitability of every clear PET film or supply by Yan Fun of every related grade or end application.

  • Thin-sheet insulation and separation for electronics:Evaluate film between components and confirm thickness, electrical requirements, edges and fixation.
  • Visible covering or separation layers:Assess visibility, flatness and fixation. Wear, scratch resistance or protection requires separate acceptance criteria.
  • Motor, transformer or cable insulation:Select the material grade, thickness and documents against equipment requirements, not transparent appearance alone.
  • Printing, label and display films:Specify appropriate surface and material grades, then confirm ink or adhesive systems, optical requirements and processing compatibility.

Additional Checks for Semiconductor Equipment

For vacuum or clean areas, specify outgassing, particles, residues, chemical contact and packaging in addition to dimensions and insulation. General PET film data does not prove suitability for every process location.

Thickness, Processing and Acceptance: More Than One Number

Thickness Range and Clear Grades

Yan Fun’s existing PET-Mylar product information lists a series thickness range of 0.025–0.5 mm(25–500 μm). This is series information, not confirmation that every thickness is available as a clear grade, in stock or in the same material grade. Enquire by part number.

Thickness conversion:1 mm = 1,000 μm; 0.025 mm = 25 μm; 0.1 mm = 100 μm. Use consistent units on drawings and enquiries and specify thickness tolerances.

Provide Dimensions and Processing Requirements Together

For cutting, punched holes, shaped parts or lamination, provide drawings, hole positions and dimensional tolerances, and confirm processing availability first. Identical thickness does not mean different shapes can use the same process or acceptance method.

Near precision components, edges, burrs, cleanliness and packaging can be as important as dimensions. Specify adhesive or coating systems separately; bare film and processed composite parts are different products.

Suggested Sample Evaluation

  1. Define the application:Prioritise visibility, insulation, separation and printing needs.
  2. Select candidate materials:Confirm brand or part number, thickness, surface, documents and supply form.
  3. Trial assembly:Check visibility, flatness, dimensional fit, edges and fixation.
  4. Document acceptance criteria:Record passing conditions in drawings, material requirements and document lists, then confirm production supply.

Prepare This Information Before Enquiring

  • Brand, part number or current material; if unspecified, describe the function.
  • Thickness and tolerances, outline dimensions, hole positions, sheet or roll requirements.
  • Transparency, haze, colour, surface and viewing application.
  • Continuous and short-duration temperatures, working voltage, testing and chemical environment.
  • Cutting, punched holes, lamination, packaging and required documents.
  • Drawings, sample and production quantities, requested delivery and acceptance criteria.

Frequently asked questions

Is clear Mylar the same as any clear plastic sheet?

No. “Clear plastic sheet” may refer to PET, PC or other materials. Confirm the material, then compare thickness, thermal, mechanical, electrical and processing requirements.

Is clear PET always flame retardant?

Appearance or the PET name alone cannot establish flame retardancy. Provide the required rating and documents, then confirm compliance for the specified part number and thickness.

Is Mylar the same as metallised film?

Not necessarily. Metallised film has an additional metal layer and different appearance and functions. Specify clear bare film or a composite with coatings, adhesive or a metal layer.

Can PET directly replace PC or PP insulation sheets?

Compare material grade, dimensions, temperature, electrical, mechanical and processing conditions. Identical size does not mean identical function; assess specifications and validate the application.
